Question about electric water heater thermostat replacement?

I need to know if when replacing an electric water heater thermostat with a screw compatible one (not exactly the same thermostat). Do I have to worry about the ground and power wires going into the right place or can they be reversed without problem.

The thermostat is just a switch. When the tank reachs the correct temperature the switch opens shutting off the electricity to the heating coils in the tank. When the tank cools, the switch will close again and the electricity will heating coils will
