what gauge wire to use when installing a wireless thermostat?

I am wiring the sensor (equipment interface module) to the the heat/ac unit. It is a class 2 remote thermostat. what gauge wire should i use for this
Usually 24 ga is standard from the remote receiver (where the old thermostat as mounted) to the control board of the heat/ac unit.

So my brother has a hyosung gv650 (gay i know, but he was 19 and i just wanted him to get something slow and safe ;) We recently changed his thermostat, but as soon as we finished his temperature gage STOPPED working. So i changed the hot water sensor, still nothing. This has me thinking maybe the wires are messed up? Any help is appreciated.
